WP7

Trial Application II – TSO Perspective

Start date or Starting Event: 21

Objectives

This WP identifies applications of interest for a network system operator, builds relevant application cases, the related data and knowledge bases and experiments the prototype DSS on the application cases.

The cascading paths of incidents are analysed and it is explored, which incidents (combination of incidents) will lead to large-scale power outages. The effectiveness of the countermeasures initiated by the DSS to prevent the occurrence or the expansion of a blackout are given and analysed.

As already explained in the section “Objectives” of work package 1, all deliverables will be examined regarding their potential security sensitiveness by the Security Consulting Board. For more details on the tasks of the SCB, see section 2.1.2.

Output of WP6 that is used as input for WP5:

  • Feedback catalogue for refinement of DSS

Description of work

  • Task 7.1 – Scenario Definition (Leading Partner: TrEl)
In this work step a number of blackout scenarios are defined. These definitions follow the incidents as analysed is Task 1.2. The scenarios include likely as well as unlikely origins of blackouts.

  • Task 7.2 – Cascading Paths (Leading Partner: TrEl)
In this work step, the cascading paths of the incidents defined in Task 7.1 are analysed. It is analysed which incidents (combination of incidents) will lead to large-scale power outages. A timetable of the expansion of the blackouts is given and the single events (e.g. failure of a certain sector of the grid) are explained in detail.

  • Task 7.3 – Effectiveness of the Countermeasures (Leading Partner: TrEl)
In this work step the effectiveness of the countermeasures sugested by the DSS is tested on the cascading paths of the simulated blackouts defined in WP 7.1. The emphasis in this analytical step is placed on the amount of lost load that could be avoided by a certain countermeasure – compared to the current situation

Deliverables

This Work packages gives 2 deliverables:

  • Del 7.1 – Report on Trial Application II
In this deliverable the scenarios used in the trial applications are described. Furthermore, the response of the DSS to these scenarios is given.
    Security Sensitive: NO

  • Del 7.2 – Feedback Catalogue II
The users of the DSS in trial application II list their experiences with the system. A catalogue of needed changes (regarding functionality and output quality) is delivered to the implementers of the DSS as input for Task 5.2 (Refinement of DSS).
    Security Sensitive: NO
